Cruel and Inhumane Punishment
California's prisons have been the center of cruel and inhumane treatment for prisoners. The conditions have been so bad the the US Supreme Court upheld an order requiring California to clean up its act-- yet, prisoners are facing group punishment, extreme solitary confinement and a lack of proper sanitation. In response, thousands of prisoners --mostly Latino and African-American-- across the state are on a hunger strike.
Governor Jerry Brown can require the California Department of Corrections to uphold the law and provide constitutionally safe conditions for prisoners.
