Tell California regulators to reject plans to build new polluting gas plants near our families!

State authorities are about to vote on a proposed plan giving Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric a pass to build new polluting gas-fired power plants in Southern California. These “natural gas plants” are anything but “natural”.

Particulate matter and ozone emissions from these plants are known to exacerbate asthma rates in our already polluted communities. And guess where these power plants are often built? Probably not by wealthy mansions but right near where Latinos and other working-class families live.

There is a better way. Renewable energy sources like solar and energy conservation, among other clean alternatives, are far better solutions. This is what our Latino community in Southern California would prefer. In fact, a recent poll released by The Sierra Club jointly with Presente.org showed that Latinos support a replacement strategy favoring clean renewable energy over polluting power plants.

Tell the PUC to stand strong against giving Southern California’s utilities a pass to build more polluting gas-fired power plants in our communities!

The Message

Below is the message we'll forward to the California Public Utilities Commission:

Dear Commissioners,

I am encouraged to hear that your most recent proposal regarding power replacement for the retired San Onofre Nuclear Generating authorizes San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison is to replace the nuclear plant with clean renewable energy.

I am, however, deeply disturbed that the proposal also gives the utilities the option of coming back and proposing new gas-fired power plants. This is unacceptable.

“Natural gas plants” are anything but “natural”. In order to produce energy, they burn gas extracted through dangerous methods like fracking, which has larger climate disruption implications. Worse, particulate matter and ozone emissions from these plants are known to exacerbate asthma rates in our already polluted neighborhoods, especially in low-income and among communities of color.

Natural gas is already the largest source of pollution in California's electric sector. Southern California already suffers from the dirtiest air in the nation.

Please do not give the utility companies the power to build more polluting gas plants!
